How to Check if a Business Name Is Available

The five checks to run before you commit to a business name.

1. Domain name

Search the .com and your preferred alternatives at a registrar or on Claimly. If the domain is parked or for sale for thousands of dollars, consider a different name.

2. Social media handles

Check Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn and YouTube. Consistent handles make you easier to find.

3. Trademarks

Search your country's trademark database (for example the USPTO in the US) for marks in your industry. A registered mark in your field is a reason to choose another name. This isn't legal advice; for anything uncertain, ask a trademark lawyer.

4. Company register

Check whether the name is free with the authority where you'll register your company, such as a free zone or economic department in the UAE, or your state in the US.

5. Search results

Google the name. If the first page is full of another business, customers will struggle to find you.
